Cheong Tin Ut

Violin / Macao/Portugal

Born and raised in Macao, he is currently a second semester student in MUK (Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien).

Cheong, whose love for violin was nurtured by his mother, Ms. Lam U Fan, and former teachers Mr. Hoi Kin Wa, Mr. Hoi Ian Lok, and Mr. Michael Ma. Now is currently studying with Livia Sellin. In 2024, Cheong had an opportunity to performing Bach double violin concerto with Joshua Bell. In 2023, as representatives of the Macau Youth Symphonic Orchestra Quartet, they participated in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Guangzhou) International Youth Music Week exchange and were instructed by the world-renowned quartet ensemble, the ’Shanghai Quartet‘. Cheong has also participated in the master classes of many violinists and educators, including Mr. Zhu Xiong Zhen, Mr. Wong Fu Tong, Mr. Stephen Rose, Boris Kuschnir, Ms. Bomsori Kim, Mrs. Hong Coleman Meesun, etc.

Having been participating in the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra since 2016, Cheong was one of the concertmasters of the orchestra. He received the 2019 and 2021 ABRSM Violin Grade 7 and 8 Performance Certificates with the highest score in Macau. Then he was invited to perform in the ABRSM High Scorers’ Concert, the first ABRSM Global Online Concerts. In the 38th 40th 42nd MacaoYouth Music Competition, Cheong received awards such as the first prize in the Intermediate level of Violin , Best Performance Group Award , first prize in the Advanced level of Violin, first prize in the Advanced level of Viola and first prize in the String Concerto(Advanced Level), In the 2022 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Youth Competition, Helgi received the Gold Award for Macao Preliminary and National Finals in the Professional Youth Group, and was awarded the Special prize “Future Musicians”.

As a soloist, Cheong performed Mozart concertante for Violin, Viola, and Orchestra, Navarra by Sarasate, Violin Concerto No.3 by Saint-Saëns, Double concerto by Brahms and Violin concerto by Sibelius.

Besides challenging himself by joining different competitions, Helgi seeks improvements by participating in various local and overseas performances. Those performances included Macau New Year Concert, Anniversary Concerts of MYSO, Macau New Generation Musicians Concert, Macau YSO festival. In 2017, he engaged in the 14th Neubrandenburg International Festival and the Youth Concerts during the Germany tour of MYSO, in which he also visited Berlin, Dresden, and Eisenach. In 2018, he attended Les Flaneries Musicales de Reims in France and visited Paris, Marseille, Nice, and other cities. In July 2019, he followed MYSO to Beijing and Portugal to attend the 11th Festival Ao Largo in Lisbon, the 11th Festival das Artes in Coimbra, and the 6th Festival Internacional de Música de Marvão.
