Johanna Maria Mayr

Johanna Maria Mayr is an Austrian, Vienna-based bassoonist. Born 1998 in Salzburg, she took first piano lessons at the age of 8 and first bassoon lessons at the age of 14, and already won prizes at national youth music competitions such as Prima la Musica/Musik der Jugend as a soloist as well as in ensembles. After graduating, she went on to study with Prof. Richard Galler at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and earned her first diploma in June 2021. Additionally, she took master classes with renowned international bassoonists, such as Dag Jensen, Malte Refardt, Bence Boganyi and Philipp Tutzer, and completed the Angelika Prokopp Sommerakademie der Wiener Philharmoniker, as well as the Collegium Musicum Pommersfelden.

To gain orchestra experience she played in various ensembles, e.g.  Wiener Jeunesse Orchester, Webern Sinfonieorchester, Junge Philharmonie Wien and Louis Spohr Kammerorchester Kassel. She also frequently plays in the famous Viennese concert halls Musikverein and Konzerthaus. Chamber music has a special place in her work, especially the young and exciting chamber orchestra Ultreia. Another important aspect of her musical work is improvising, and with her trio bunt she has won competitions and performs regularly, always looking for new concepts and expanding the horizon of classical music.
