The inauguration of the 14th Spisak Competition

14 October 2023

Yesterday, i.e. October 13, we inaugurated the 14th edition of the Michal Spisak International Music Competition.

It all started with the opening of three exhibitions in the spaces of the Zagłębie Palace of Culture: the exhibition Between Sound and Image by Patrycja Antczak, the post-competition exhibition of the 2nd Inter-University Competition for Poster Design, and the exhibition of the Drawing Activities Studio of the Katowice Academy of Fine Arts entitled TOPOR/ŁABUZ/STUDENTS. All exhibitions will be open to palace guests until November 24.

On the stage of the Theater Hall of the Zagłębie Palace of Culture, the Inaugural Concert featured pianist Magdalena Lisak and the Karol Szymanowski Academic Symphony Orchestra under the baton of maestro Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk. In addition to Witold Lutoslawski’s Variations for Symphony Orchestra and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, the concert program could not miss the works of Michal Spisak, specifically the Piano Concerto.

However, before we heard the excellent young musicians from the Academic Symphony Orchestra, representatives of the organizers, Bożena Borowiec (Deputy Mayor of Dąbrowa Górnicza), Prof. Jacek Glenc (Pro-rector of the K. Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice), Grzegorz Drygała (Director of the Zagłębie Palace of Culture) and Prof. Roman Widaszek (Artistic Director of the Festival) officially opened the 14th edition of the competition.

The concert was attended not only by representatives of the authorities and the world of culture, but also by contestants and local viewers. Special guests were Prof. Leon Markiewicz – a friend of Michal Spisak and author of his biography – as well as the Director of the Michal Spisak International Music Competition 2007-2018, Prof. Zygmunt Tlatlik.
The concert was conducted by Ewa Niewiadomska.

Today, i.e. October 14, from 10:00 a.m., the public auditions of the first stage of the competition began, in which young musicians from all over the world, playing trumpet, French horn and trombone, are taking part. They will present their skills before an international jury on three stages of the Zagłębie Culture Palace. Today’s auditions will be crowned with a masterclass concert  Moc Blachy, performed by the competition’s jurors and pianist Dagmara Niedziela.
