Graduated with honours from the Academy of Music in Katowice in the conducting class of K. Stryja. Scholarship holder of the American Society for Polish Music, he developed his conducting skills in Los Angeles. In the period 1984-1986, he conducted an ensemble composed of musicians of the Katowice-based Polish National Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra during the “Warsaw Autumn” and “Silesian Days of Contemporary Music” festivals. In 1986 he became Artistic Director of the Symphony Orchestra of Zabrze Philharmonic, and in 1990 he became General Manager and Artistic Director of the State Philharmonic in Białystok, with which he toured the USA (including New York’s Carnegie Hall, 1995). He was chief and artistic director of the Poznań Philharmonic for two seasons (1996). In the period 1998-2013 artistic director, since 2013 director of the H.M. Górecki Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice. Since 1999, artistic director and juror of the Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors. Since 2017, artistic director of the Polish Orchestra “Sinfonia Iuventus”. In 1999-2002 he was a chief conductor of the International Piano Competition in Porto (Portugal), and in 2003 he was a juror and conductor at the International Piano Competition in Morocco. In 2005, he was appointed artistic director of the 2nd International Violin Competition in Toruń, the position which he also held in 2013; he was a juror at the 3rd and 4th Toruń competitions (2013, 2016). In 2011, he assumed the position of chairman of the jury of the 8th Witold Lutosławski International Cello Competition in Warsaw. He was a chairman of the jury of the 6th National Competition for Young Conductors in Białystok (2016). He performs on all stages in the country (with the National Philharmonic at the forefront) and abroad. He has recorded several dozen albums with the Silesian Philharmonic ensembles. “Górecki. Mikołaj/Henryk Mikołaj” (DUX 0924) was nominated for the 2013 Fryderyk Award. He has premiered many works. The Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra under his baton were the first Polish performers of the Symphony No. 4, “Tansman. Episodes’ by H.M. Górecki, concluding a series of world premieres of this work (2014/2015 London – Los Angeles – Amsterdam – Łódź/Katowice). This performance, as the second in the world was released on CD in 2016. In 2017, a CD of H.M. Górecki’s Symphony No. 2 ‘Copernican’ was released under his baton. For his promotion of Polish music, with a particular focus on contemporary music, and for the achievements of the members of Silesian Philharmonic under his baton, he received the Award of the Mayor of the City of Katowice in the field of culture. He was also honoured with a similar one by the Mayor of Rybnik. He is the Head of the Symphonic and Operatic Conducting Department at the K. Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. On 7 August 2012, the President of the Republic of Poland, B. Komorowski, awarded the artist the title of Professor of Musical Arts. Since 2017, he has been the artistic director and first conductor of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic. In 2020 Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk was awarded the ‘Merit to Culture Gloria Artis’ Gold Medal.
